The Major Environmental Problems
(not in order of importance)
(In all, there are known solutions- the problem is "won't" rather than "don't know how")

Volusia - Floridan Sole Source Aquifier being pumped more than recharge

FDOT proposing to hard-armor Flagler beaches to "protect" A1A

FDOT plans for autos rather than for transportation of people

Cities can annex any property whose owner agrees

FDOT doesl not provide movement corridors for wildlife under roads and highways

Wetlands continue to be lost by filling

Sewage effluent (sometimes nearly untreated) going into surface water

No attention paid to vegetation type changes or fire hazard due to aquifer pumping

No attention paid to die-off of coquina and mole crabs on Volusia beaches

No census of rookeries, no protection measures

Beaches continue to be lined with high-rise buildings, much too close to the ocean

No policy or plan for the beach after a major storm

Volusia County "studying beach renourishment" as a counter to current and expected erosion

No plan to live with existing and expected sea-level rise

No plan to alleviate existing and expected global warming

Courts not required to have any expertise in matters they decide

Decision bodies too compliant to immediate economic claims rather than long term impact

"Cumulative Impact" a required factor in decisions, but usually is totally neglected

Stormwater runoff contamination of surface waters continues: inadequate waters protection

Inappropriate use of land
